MTB Headsets FAQ
Whether you’re running a classic 1-1/8" headset or a tapered headset with 1-1/8" upper and 1-1/2" lower diameter – choosing the right headset is crucial for your bike’s performance. Both types have their advantages:
- 1-1/8" headsets were the standard for MTB frames for many years. They're lightweight, easy to maintain, and perfectly suitable for most XC and trail bikes.
- Tapered headsets combine a 1-1/8" upper with a 1-1/2" lower diameter. This increases front-end stiffness and stability, especially beneficial for aggressive riding, high loads, and suspension forks with longer travel.
What’s the difference between a 1-1/8" and a tapered headset?
A 1-1/8" headset has the same diameter at the top and bottom. Tapered headsets, on the other hand, widen toward the bottom: 1-1/8" top, 1-1/2" bottom – providing improved stiffness and stability for modern MTB frames.
When choosing a headset, make sure it’s compatible with both your frame and your fork: the inner diameter of the head tube and the fork steerer must match the headset dimensions.
