BMX Race Headsets FAQ

Whether you’re running a 1", 1-1/8" or tapered headset – choosing the right setup is essential for handling, stiffness, and weight in BMX Race. The correct headset depends on your frame, fork steerer, and riding style:

  • 1" headsets are used on Mini or Junior frames. They’re ultra-light and ideal for young riders or lightweight builds.
  • 1-1/8" headsets are the standard on most Expert and Pro frames. They offer a great balance of stiffness and weight – perfect for serious racers.
  • Tapered headsets combine a 1-1/8" upper diameter with a 1-1/2" lower. This adds stiffness and strength – ideal for powerful riders or tracks with high speeds and big landings.

What’s the difference between 1", 1-1/8", and tapered?
A 1" headset is narrower and lighter – great for smaller frames. 1-1/8" is the most common standard in BMX Race, offering versatility. Tapered headsets increase front-end stiffness and steering precision with a larger 1-1/2" lower bearing – a popular choice for modern Pro-level bikes.

Note: Always check compatibility with your frame and fork. The headset must match both the inner diameter of the head tube and the steerer tube of your fork for a proper and safe fit.
