BMX Race Rim Strips

Protect your tube from flats with durable BMX Race Rim Tape. Since race tires run at high pressures (up to 100 PSI), simple rubber bands often fail. We recommend robust Vinyl or Nylon tapes that handle the pressure without bulging. Check the width guide below to match your Rims.

BMX Race Rim Strips FAQ

What is BMX Race Rim Tape and why is it essential?

The Rim Tape is a protective strip that sits inside the rim bed. It covers the spoke holes and nipple ends. In BMX Racing, this is critical because sharp spoke holes can instantly puncture a high-pressure tube. Unlike freestyle setups (lower pressure), race tires are inflated to 80-100 PSI, pressing the tube with immense force against the rim bed.

Why Vinyl/Nylon instead of Rubber?

In the past, simple rubber bands were used, but they are unsuitable for modern racing:

Rubber Bands (Avoid!)
Too elastic. Under high pressure (80+ PSI), the tube pushes the rubber deep into the spoke holes, causing "dimples" or cuts in the tube.
Vinyl / Nylon (The Standard)
Stiff, non-elastic, and durable. These high-pressure tapes bridge the spoke holes smoothly and prevent the tube from expanding into them. This is the standard for BMX Racing.

Which width do I need?

The width of the tape must match the internal width of your rim. If it is too wide, it interferes with the tire bead seating. If it is too narrow, it might slide off the spoke holes.

Rim Type Typical Tape Width Note
Mini / Junior (451mm) 16mm - 18mm Very narrow rims require narrow tape to ensure the tire bead seats correctly.
Pro / Cruiser (406mm) 20mm - 22mm Standard width for most modern Pro rims.

How do I install Snap-On / Vinyl Rim Tape?

  1. Clean the Rim: Ensure the rim bed is free of dirt or sharp metal shavings from manufacturing.
  2. Align the Valve: Locate the valve hole in the tape and align it perfectly with the valve hole in the rim.
  3. Stretch it on: Vinyl tapes are tight! Insert a screwdriver through the valve holes to hold it in place, then stretch the rest of the band over the rim. It should snap into place with a tight fit.
  4. Check Alignment: Run your finger around the rim. The tape should cover all spoke holes but must not ride up the sidewalls where the tire bead sits.

What about Tubeless Tape?

If you run a Tubeless Setup, you cannot use Vinyl tape. You need specific Adhesive Tubeless Tape that creates an airtight seal. Vinyl tape is only for use with Inner Tubes.

What do the specifications mean?
