Oldschool BMX Parts FAQ
What are Oldschool BMX Parts?
This category is dedicated to the era of the 80s and 90s. Here you will find spare parts for restorations (rebuilds) of classic brands like GT, Haro, Kuwahara, or Skyway. Most are high-quality reproductions (repros) that combine the original look with modern manufacturing quality, or "New Old Stock" (NOS) goods.
What distinguishes Oldschool from Newschool?
Technology has changed massively. Old parts often don't fit new bikes and vice versa. The most important differences:
- Headset & Fork
- Past Standard: 1 inch threaded forks with screwed headset and quill stem.
Today: 1 1/8 inch threadless (Ahead). - Bottom Bracket
- Past: US BB (American) with large cups to press in or loose ball bearings.
Today: Mid BB or Spanish BB. - Seat Post
- Past: Thin 22.2mm (7/8 inch) posts, often in "Layback" shape (bent).
Today: 25.4mm straight posts. - Brakes
- Past: Sidepull or U-Brakes front and rear.
Today: U-Brake only at the rear, often no holes at all at the front.
What do I need to watch out for during restoration?
Measure your old parts exactly before ordering:
| Component | Critical Dimension |
|---|---|
| Stem Shaft | Does your fork have an inner diameter of 21.1mm (BMX old) or 22.2mm (Standard)? Wrong stems won't fit or will wobble! |
| Axles | Oldschool frames often have 10mm (3/8") dropouts even at the rear. Modern 14mm axles won't fit there (except for special flatland frames). |
| Sprocket | In the past, people rode large sprockets (44T). Check if your frame offers enough space ("Chainstay Clearance") and if you have a suitable chain. |
