BMX Race Seatclamps FAQ
What is a BMX Race Seat Clamp?
The clamp sits on the seat tube of the frame and squeezes it tight to hold the Seat Post in place. In BMX Racing, choosing the right type affects your workflow on race day.
The Duel: Quick Release (QR) vs. Bolt
- Quick Release (QR)
- Has a lever that allows you to open the clamp by hand.
Best for: Training and warm-up. Essential if you swap between a long warm-up post and a short race post between motos. - Bolt Clamp
- Uses an Allen key (Innensechskant) bolt to tighten.
Best for: Racing. Lighter, more aerodynamic, and won't snag on your pants. Once set, it stays put.
Which Size do I need?
The clamp size is determined by the Outer Diameter of the Frame Tube, not the seat post itself. Here are the common pairings:
| If your Seat Post is... | Your Clamp usually needs to be... | Frame Type |
|---|---|---|
| 22.2 mm | 25.4 mm | Mini / Junior / Expert (Steel/Alloy) |
| 26.8 mm / 27.2 mm | 31.8 mm | Pro / Pro XL (Alloy Frames) |
| 27.2 mm (Carbon) | 31.8 mm OR 34.9 mm | Carbon Frames often have thicker walls! Check manufacturer specs! |
Rule of thumb: The clamp is usually ~4mm larger than the post diameter.
