BMX Race Headset Spacer FAQ
What are Headset Spacers and why do I need them?
Spacers are rings placed between the Headset top cap and the Stem. They serve two purposes:
- Adjust Bar Height: By moving spacers above or below the stem, you can change the cockpit height without buying new handlebars.
- Headset Compression: You need enough spacers so that the stem protrudes slightly above the fork steerer. This allows the top cap to compress the system and eliminate play.
Carbon vs. Aluminum
- Carbon Fiber
- The racer's choice. Extremely light and looks technical. Ideal for Pro builds.
- Aluminum
- Available in many anodized colors to match your hubs or frame. Very robust.
How many spacers do I need?
It depends on your fork length. Always follow the "Gap Rule": The top spacer (or the stem) must sit approx. 2-3mm higher than the fork steerer tube. If the fork tube is flush or higher, the top cap will touch the fork instead of the stem, and your headset will remain loose.
