Brake Spare Parts FAQ
What are Brake Spare Parts and when do I need them?
Often the whole brake isn't broken, just a cheap small part. Worn-out springs, stripped bolts, or snapped straddle cables can be easily replaced to restore braking power. The Anatomy of Small Parts
- Brake Springs
- The spiral springs inside the brake arms that open the brake after pulling. Warning: There are left and right springs!
- Barrel Adjuster
- The hollow screw on the brake lever or frame used to fine-tune cable tension.
- Cable Hanger
- Connects the main brake cable to the straddle cable.
What do I need to watch out for with springs?
Brake springs are the trickiest spare part:- Brand Specific: An Odyssey spring may not fit a Salt brake, because the shape of the ends may vary.
- Tension (Left vs. Right): Springs are wound in mirror image. Pay attention to which side you are replacing during installation.
How do I maintain my brake with spare parts?
- Improve Return: If the brake sticks, clean the brake mounts on the frame and regrease them before installing new springs.
- Adjusters: If the thread of the adjuster bolt (usually M6) is damaged, replace it immediately to avoid destroying the thread in the frame/lever.
