    Grips FAQ

What are BMX Grips and what is their main purpose?

Standard Grips (Push-On) consist entirely of a rubber compound. They are slid directly onto the handlebars. Their main task is shock absorption (damping) and providing grip. Since there is no plastic core, they offer the most direct and comfortable riding feel.

How is a BMX Grip constructed?

The construction is simple but effective.

    Grip Surface
The profile (e.g., ribs, waffle pattern, mushroom) determines the grip level and how sweat is wicked away.
    Rubber Compound
Soft compounds grip well but wear out faster. Hard compounds last longer but dampen less.
    Flange (optional)
A rubber disc on the inside. Protects the thumb, but can get in the way during barspins.

What types of BMX Grips are available?

Besides the Lock-On systems, standard grips differ mainly in shape:

    Flangeless
Without a flange. The standard for modern street and park riding. Nothing gets in the way when catching barspins.
    With Flange
The classic look (Oldschool/Dirt). Protects the thumb from the brake lever or the clamp, but takes up space on the bar.
    Longneck
Extra long grips (often 160mm+). Popular with riders who want a larger catching area.

    Which materials are used?

    Kraton Rubber
The synthetic standard rubber. Durable and grippy.
    VEX / Super Soft Compounds
Special proprietary mixtures from brands like Odyssey or Sunday. They feel "broken in" right away but might wear slightly faster.

Which Grip is right for my needs?

If you want maximum comfort, stick with Standard Grips. If you want easy installation, look at Lock-Ons.

    Preference Recommendation
Barspins & Tech Street Flangeless, Soft, Long (160mm+). You need space to catch the bars.
Trails & Oldschool With Flange, Mushroom Profile. The classic look and thumb protection are key here.
Maximum Cushioning Thick Ribs (Mushroom). The lamellas act like small shock absorbers.

How do I install Standard BMX Grips?

Installation is harder than with Lock-Ons, but doable with tricks:

    1. Compressed Air (Best Method): Blow air under the grip with a compressor while pushing it on.
    2. Cable Ties: Put 4 cable ties into the grip, slide it on, pull the ties out one by one.
    3. Hairspray / Alcohol: Spray the inside, slide it on fast. When it dries, it sticks like glue. Don't use oil or grease! (Otherwise, you get the dangerous "throttle grip").

How do I identify and fix common problems?

    • Grip twists (Throttle Grip): Usually caused by rain or improper installation (oil residue). Remove, clean bar with brake cleaner, reinstall with hairspray.
    • Bar Ends missing: Never ride without plugs! If the grip is open at the end, replace the Bar Ends immediately.
