Headset Spacer FAQ

What are Headset Spacers and what is their main purpose?

Headset Spacers are simple rings placed on the fork steerer between the headset cap and the stem. They have two functions:

  1. Height Adjustment: They raise the stem and thus the handlebars (Stack Height).
  2. Technical Necessity: They ensure the stem sits high enough on the fork so the top cap can compress the headset without hitting the steerer tube.

What types of Spacers are available?

The form is always a ring with 1 1/8 inch inner diameter, but materials vary.

Aluminium
The standard. Robust, cheap, and available in all anodized colors.
Carbon
Extremely light and with a distinct look. Popular for Race and high-end custom builds.
and high-end custom builds.
Polycarbonate (Plastic)
Light and cheap, often used on complete bikes.

Which Spacer do I need?

You usually need a set of different sizes to find the perfect height.

Height Usage
3mm / 5mm For fine-tuning. Often used to create the necessary gap between stem and fork steerer.
10mm To significantly raise the handlebars.
Kit (Set) Contains usually 2x 5mm and 1x 10mm etc. Recommended for new builds.

Installation Tips

  • Don't stack too high: Avoid putting more than 20-30mm of spacers under the stem, as this increases leverage on the fork steerer. If you need it higher, get a higher handlebar.
  • Under or Over? You can also place spacers on top of the stem if you don't want to cut your fork yet but want the bars lower.
