MTB Headset Spacer FAQ
What are headset spacers and why do I need them?
Spacers are rings placed on the steerer tube between the headset and the stem. They determine how high your handlebars sit (stack height). Higher handlebars provide more confidence in steep terrain, while a lower cockpit puts more pressure on the front wheel.
What materials are available?
- Aluminum
- Robust, affordable, and available in many anodized colors. Perfect for color matching.
- Carbon
- Ultra-lightweight with a premium weave look. The choice for weight weenies and racers.
How many spacers can I install?
That depends on the length of your fork's steerer tube.
- Below the stem: You can use as many spacers as the steerer allows. However, the stem must still be able to clamp fully onto the tube.
- Above the stem: It is often useful to install a small 5mm spacer above the stem to ensure the stem clamps the steerer tube completely.
