Stem Bolts FAQ

What are Stem Bolts and what is their main purpose?

Stem Bolts are the screws that hold your stem together. They clamp the stem to the fork and hold the handlebars in place. Since they are exposed to sweat and weather, they often rust or the heads get rounded off from frequent tightening.

What types of Stem Bolts are available?

The thread is almost always uniform (Metric Standard), but the heads differ.

Solid Bolts
Full material screws. Heavy, but offer maximum stability and usually have a deeper tool socket.
Hollow Bolts
Hollow drilled screws. Save weight without significantly sacrificing stability (as the core of a screw carries little load).

Which materials are used?

CrMo Steel
The standard. Very strong, heat-treated steel. Often black or chrome.
Titanium
High-End upgrade. About 40% lighter than steel and absolutely rust-free. Perfect for the "Oil Slick" / Rainbow look.

Which Bolts fit my Stem?

Almost all modern BMX stems use the same standard.

Spec Value Note
Thread (Gewinde) Metric M8 x 1.25 Fits 99% of all BMX stems (Odyssey, Cult, Cinema, etc.). Caution: Some US stems (Profile, S&M) use inch threads (Imperial).
Length ~25mm - 30mm If the new bolt is slightly longer, it usually doesn't matter (the holes are often open at the back).
Head Diameter Standardized Ensure the head fits into the recess (counterbore) of your stem.

How do I maintain Stem Bolts?

  • Grease: Always apply a little grease to the thread before installation! This ensures correct torque and prevents rusting tight.
  • Tool: Use high-quality Allen keys. Worn keys destroy the bolt head immediately.
