BMX Race Cassette Hubs FAQ

What is a BMX Race Cassette Hub and what makes it special?

The Rear Hub contains the drivetrain mechanism. In BMX Racing, "Engagement" is everything. The faster the hub engages when you start pedaling, the faster you get out of the gate. Modern race hubs often feature Instant Engagement (zero delay) and mounts for Disc Brakes.

How is a Race Cassette Hub constructed?

Driver
The part that holds the cog. Usually made of aluminum or titanium. Standard in racing is the Shimano-compatible driver for slide-on cogs.
Engagement System
Pawls: Classic "clicking" sound. Reliable and light.
Sprag Clutch (e.g., Onyx): Silent and instant engagement. Slightly heavier but zero drag while coasting.
Disc Mount
ISO 6-Bolt: The standard for mounting brake rotors in BMX.

Which Axle Standard do I need?

The rear hub must match your frame's dropouts exactly. Check your frame specs!

Axle Type Typical Frame Compatibility
10mm (3/8") Bolt-In Standard for most frames (Junior to Pro). Fits open dropouts.
15mm Thru-Axle Used by brands like Meybo (older models) or Redline. Requires closed dropouts.
20mm Thru-Axle The new standard for stiffness (e.g., Meybo HSX, Chase ACT). Requires specific dropouts and tensioners.

What is "Instant Engagement"?

In a standard hub, there is a small gap (degrees of rotation) before the pawls catch. In a race start, this gap is lost time. Instant Engagement hubs (like Onyx) eliminate this gap completely – as soon as your foot moves, the wheel moves. This provides a massive advantage at the gate and out of corners.

What do the specifications mean?

Specification Explanation Examples/Available
Engagement How fast the hub catches. Instant (Onyx), 120 Points (High), Standard
Axle Diameter of the mounting hardware. 10mm, 15mm, 20mm
Disc Mount Interface for the brake rotor. ISO 6-Bolt (Standard), Centerlock (Rare)
