Lock-On Grips FAQ
What are Lock-On Grips and what is their main purpose?
Lock-On Grips have a solid plastic core inside the rubber and are clamped onto the handlebar with metal rings (clamps). Their main purpose is to prevent twisting (throttle grip effect) 100%, even in the worst weather conditions, and to make installation effortless.
How is a Lock-On Grip constructed?
Unlike standard grips, these are high-tech components.
- Plastic Sleeve (Core)
- A hard plastic tube inside. The rubber is vulcanized onto this tube.
- Clamps (Lock-Rings)
- Aluminium rings at one or both ends that are tightened with an Allen bolt.
- Snap-In Cap
- Often, the bar end is integrated into the clamping system.
What types of Lock-On Grips are available?
The main difference lies in the number of clamps.
- Single Clamp
- Only one clamp on the inside. The outside is rubber-covered (more comfortable for the palm). Popular in modern BMX and MTB.
- Double Clamp
- Clamps on both sides. Extremely secure, but the outer hard metal ring can be uncomfortable if you hold the bars at the very edge.
Which Grip is right for my needs?
Lock-Ons are the technical alternative to standard rubber grips.
| Feature | Lock-On Grip | Standard Grip |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Super Easy. Slide on, tighten screw, done. | Harder. Needs hairspray, zip ties, or air. |
| Hold | 100% Bombproof. Will never twist. | Can twist in heavy rain or if glue fails. |
| Comfort/Cushioning | Medium. Stiffer due to the plastic core. | High. More rubber between hand and metal. |
How do I install Lock-On Grips?
- Clean Bar: Ensure the handlebar area is clean and dry. No grease!
- Slide On: Push the grip onto the bar. It fits loosely until clamped.
- Tighten: Tighten the Allen bolts on the clamps. Caution: Do not overtighten! Usually, 2-3 Nm is enough.
- Bar Ends: Install the included Snap-In caps.
How do I identify and fix common problems?
- Bolt stripped: Use high-quality Allen keys. The small bolts are sensitive.
- Grip rattles: Check if the clamp is fully pushed onto the handlebar end before tightening.
