What is a spoke and what is its main purpose?

A spoke connects the hub to the rim. It supports the rider's weight and transfers drive and braking forces. In BMX, spokes must withstand extreme tensile loads, especially during landings and grinds.

How is a spoke constructed?

Head

The bent part (J-Bend) anchored in the hub flange.

Shaft

The middle part that determines flexibility.

Thread

The nipple is screwed onto this end to build tension.

What types of spokes are there?

• Straight Gauge: Consistent diameter (usually 2.0mm). Very strong and affordable.
• Double Butted: Thinner in the middle (e.g., 2.0-1.8-2.0mm). Saves weight with equal strength at the ends.

What materials are used for spokes?

Stainless Steel

The standard in BMX. Rust-free, elastic, and break-resistant.

Titanium

High-end option for maximum weight savings (very expensive, rare).

Which spoke is the right one for my needs?

Length is key! It depends on your hub, the rim, and the lacing pattern (usually 3-cross). Use a spoke calculator.

How do I install spokes?

1. Lace the spokes according to the pattern (3-cross) into the Hub.
2. Guide them through the rim holes.
3. Loosely screw on the nipples.
4. Tighten all nipples gradually and true the wheel.

How do I maintain and care for spokes?

• Regularly check tension ("Ping Test").
• Tighten loose spokes immediately.

How do I identify and fix common spoke problems?

• Wobbly Wheel: Tension uneven -> True the wheel.
• Frequent Breakage: Spoke tension too low or spokes too old -> Re-lace wheel.
