MTB Brake Pads FAQ

MTB Brake Pads (Rim Brakes)

Get reliable braking performance for your V-Brakes and Cantilever systems!

The brake pads for your rim brakes are crucial for your safety and control on classic mountain bikes or trekking bikes. They are the core component of your V-Brake or Cantilever brake, consisting of the sturdy holder (brake shoe) and the easily replaceable rubber block (pad).

How to choose the right brake pad for your needs:

  • Standard Pads (Black):
    • Features: They offer solid all-around performance and work well in dry and slightly damp conditions.
    • Ideal for: If you use your bike for touring, everyday commuting, or moderate off-road use.
  • High-Performance Pads (often multi-colored):
    • Features: These special rubber compounds significantly improve braking power, especially in wet and muddy conditions. Look for integrated grooves for better water drainage.
    • Ideal for: Sporty MTB riders who demand maximum braking control even in poor weather.
  • Special Pads (for Carbon Rims):
    • Features: These softer compounds are specially optimized for carbon braking surfaces to prevent excessive heat buildup and premature rim wear.
    • Ideal for: If your mountain bike (mostly older XC models) has carbon rims.

What's important when buying:

  1. Check Your Brake System: Do you need longer V-Brake pads (often 70 mm or 72 mm, typically as a cartridge system) or shorter Cantilever pads (often 55 mm)?
  2. Consider the Rim Material: Select the rubber compound that matches your aluminium or carbon rims.
  3. Monitor Wear: Regularly check the wear limit of your rubber blocks. Replace them in time to ensure your safety and prevent damage to your rim from the metal holder.

Replace your old brake pads and ensure your brakes grip reliably again!
