MTB Lock-On Grips FAQ
What are Lock-On grips?
Lock-On grips feature an inner plastic sleeve onto which the grip rubber is molded. This sleeve is clamped to the handlebar with metal rings (clamps). This absolutely prevents the grip from twisting, even in pouring rain and mud.
What clamping systems are there?
- Single Clamp
- The grip is clamped only on the inner side.
Advantage: More comfortable for the outer palm, as there is no hard metal ring in the way when gripping the bar at the very end. - Double Clamp
- Clamps on both inside and outside.
Advantage: Maximum stability, ideal for Downhill. Often feels very stiff.
Lock-On vs. Push-On: Which is better?
| Feature | Lock-On | Push-On (Rubber) |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | In seconds (bolted) | Complex (drying time) |
| Hold | 100% twist-proof (even wet) | Can slip when wet (without wire) |
| Comfort | Harder (due to plastic sleeve) | Softer (more damping) |
How do I install Lock-On grips?
- Slide the grip onto the handlebar.
- Align the pattern/logo to suit your hand position.
- Tighten the bolt(s) of the clamp rings to the specified torque (usually 2-3 Nm).
- Use a high-quality Allen key (usually 2.5mm or 3mm) to avoid stripping the small bolt heads.
