Odyssey BMX FAQ
Who or what is Odyssey BMX?
Odyssey BMX (or Odsy) is a highly respected American BMX parts company founded in 1985 in Norwalk, California. For decades, they have been producing innovative, often award-winning BMX parts that cover almost every component on a bike—with the exception of frames.
How did Odyssey BMX start?
The brand was founded in 1985, reportedly by the brother of the current owner, Richard. One of its very first products, which is still in production today, was the Gyro Detangler (rotor). The name "Gyro" is now a registered trademark owned by Odyssey. Legend has it that the name "Odyssey" was spotted on a truck. The original black and white logo was supposedly colored in by a child, creating the iconic "retro" logo still used today.
What defines the "Odyssey feel"?
Odyssey has always been the "mad scientist" of BMX. They rethought how riding works, creating milestones like the Gyro rotor, the Hazard Lite (perhaps the most legendary rim of all time), and the award-winning "Elementary" stem (a design milestone with its single-bolt internal expander). Odyssey is for riders who value technology, precision, and design.
What makes Odyssey products special (41-Thermal)?
Odyssey's specialty lies in continuous innovation and engineering. Their 41-Thermal® heat-treating process (applied to forks, cranks, bars) revolutionized component durability. By offering a lifetime warranty against bending and breaking, they gave riders the confidence to hit the biggest gaps without worrying about their equipment.
Which Odyssey video is a must-watch?
The 2008 full-length video "Electronical" is widely regarded as one of the most influential BMX videos of all time. It not only shaped the riding style of an entire generation but also cemented the careers of superstars like Gary Young and Aaron Ross (whose colorful bikes became legendary).
Who rides/rode for Odyssey?
The Odyssey team has always been a "who's who" of the most influential riders in BMX. Besides Gary Young and Aaron Ross, who were featured prominently in "Electronical," the team consists of absolute top-tier riders like Broc Raiford, Tom Dugan, Corey Walsh, Justin Spriet, and Boyd Hilder.
What is the connection between Odyssey and G-Sport?
Around 2005, Odyssey entered an official partnership with G-Sport, a small UK parts company run by engineer and rider George French. Odyssey essentially "absorbed" G-Sport, allowing its high-end, technically advanced components (like the Ribcage rim and Marmoset/Ratchet hubs) to reach a global audience through Odyssey's distribution.
What was Odyssey Flatware?
Flatware was Odyssey's dedicated sub-brand for BMX Flatland components. Launched around 2008, the line was developed in close collaboration with flatland legends like Chase Gouin and Terry Adams, offering specialized parts tailored to the demands of flatland. The brand is no longer in active production.
Do Odyssey BMX and Odyssey Golf have the same origin?
No. Although the logos (especially the "retro" one) share a strong resemblance, they are two completely separate companies. Odyssey BMX was founded in 1985 in the bicycle industry. Odyssey Golf was founded in 1991 and is now a brand owned by the Callaway Golf Company. There is no business connection between them.
Who are Odyssey products for?
Odyssey products are aimed at serious BMX riders across all disciplines (Street, Park, Trails) who prioritize innovation, durability, and proven performance. From reliable workhorse parts to cutting-edge technology, Odyssey offers components for intermediate to professional-level riders.
