Valve Caps FAQ
What are valve caps and what is their main purpose?
A valve cap is a small screw-on cover for the valve of your tube. Its primary purpose is to prevent dust, mud, and water from entering the valve interior, which could otherwise lead to leaks. In BMX, they often serve as a stylish accessory ("customizing") as well. What types are there?
- Plastic Caps
- The standard. Light, functional, and do not corrode.
- Aluminum Caps (CNC)
- Machined aluminum, often color anodized. They look higher quality and are more stable.
- Novelty Caps
- Fun shapes like dice, grenades, skulls, or billiard balls. Usually slightly larger and heavier, but a real eye-catcher.
What materials are used?
- Plastic (ABS)
- Cheap and durable.
- Aluminum
- Light and classy. Important tip: Aluminum can seize (corrode) on the brass thread of the valve if exposed to moisture for a long time. Apply a drop of grease or oil to the thread before installation!
Which valve cap fits my BMX?
In BMX, the Car Valve (Schrader / AV) is used almost exclusively. Therefore, 99% of all caps in this category fit your BMX tubes (and cars too). How do I install valve caps?
Very simple:- Unscrew the old cap (if present).
- For metal caps: Apply a drop of oil to the valve thread.
- Screw the new cap on hand-tight. Never use pliers, otherwise you will damage the thread or twist off the valve.
