BMX Race Hubs Spare Parts FAQ
What parts are in this category?
Hub spares are about two things: Maintenance and Gear Ratio Tuning.
- Cogs (Ritzel)
- The rear gear. Changing your cog size (e.g., from 16T to 15T) is the easiest way to adjust your gear ratio for different tracks.
Standard: Shimano-compatible "Slide-On" cogs are the norm in BMX Racing. - Pawls & Springs (Sperrklinken)
- The heart of the engagement. If your hub slips or skips, the pawls or springs are likely worn or sticky.
- Axle Nuts & Bolts
- Titanium upgrades or replacements for stripped bolts.
Cog Compatibility: Standard vs. Splined
Not all cogs fit all hubs. Check the interface:
- Shimano Standard: The most common. A splined interface with one wider groove. Fits Box, Onyx, Shimano, etc.
- Threaded (Old School): Screw-on freewheels (rare on modern race bikes, found on Mini bikes).
- Specific (e.g., Onyx Ultra SS): Some high-end hubs require specific cog shapes (e.g., Onyx uses standard Shimano, but check width compatibility).
Maintenance Tip: The Sound of Speed
If your cassette hub suddenly becomes quiet or skips, old grease might have glued the pawls shut. Clean the driver mechanism and use light oil or specific pawl grease. Never use thick bearing grease on pawls!
