Front Wheels FAQ

What is a front wheel and what is its main purpose?

The front wheel must transmit steering forces and cushion front-heavy landings. It consists of a hub, spokes, nipples, and a rim. Unlike the rear wheel, it has no drive mechanism, making it lighter and lower maintenance. It is delivered fully laced and trued.

How is a front wheel constructed?

Hub
The center of the wheel. Usually with Sealed Bearings for smooth rolling.
Rim
The outer ring that holds the tire. High-quality wheels use double-wall rims.
Spokes & Nipples
Connect hub and rim. Standard is 36 spokes, often crossed 3 times for maximum stability.

What types of front wheel axles are there?

The main difference lies in the fastening method:

Male Axle
A solid threaded rod (usually 10mm) that is fixed in the fork with nuts. Classic and robust.
Female Axle (Bolts)
The axle is hollow and has internal threads. Bolts are screwed in from the outside. This looks cleaner (flush mount) and is often more resistant to breakage.

What materials are used?

6061-T6 / 7075-T6 Aluminum
Standard for hub shells and rims. Lightweight and rustproof.
4130 CrMo (Chromoly)
Used for axles and bolts to guarantee maximum tensile strength.
Stainless Steel
The preferred material for spokes as it does not rust and is flexible enough.

Which front wheel is right for me?

Check your fork and your intended use before buying:

Criterion Recommendation
Street / Park (Grinding) Choose a wheel with a Female Axle and a wide rim. Ensure that hubguards can be mounted or are included.
Flatland / Trails Weight matters here. A wheel with 36 spokes and a lightweight rim is ideal.
Axle Diameter Standard is 10mm (3/8 Inch). Check if your fork has 10mm or 14mm dropouts (modern forks are almost always 10mm).

How do I install a front wheel?

  1. Check if the rim strip sits correctly and covers the spoke holes.
  2. Install the tire and tube.
  3. Place the wheel into the fork dropouts.
  4. Tighten the bolts/nuts alternately.
