Seat Posts FAQ

What is a BMX Seat Post and what is its main purpose?

The seat post is the connecting piece between your frame and your seat. It allows you to adjust the height of the seat. In BMX Freestyle, the post must primarily be robust and hold the seat securely in position, while keeping the weight low.

How is a BMX Seat Post constructed?

A seat post is relatively simple but consists of specific zones.

Tube (Shaft)
The actual tube that slides into the frame. The standard diameter for Freestyle BMX is 25.4mm.
Head
The upper part that connects to the seat. The shape depends entirely on the mounting system (e.g., riffled for Pivotal).
Inner Mechanics (optional)
Rail posts have clamps (Guts), while Tripod and Stealth posts have internal reinforcements or threads.

What types of BMX Seat Posts are available?

The most important distinction is the mounting system. It must strictly match your seat!

Pivotal
The most common system. The head is riffled (teeth) and has no thread. The screw comes from the seat. Adjustable angle.
Stealth Pivotal
Similar to Pivotal, but the screw is tightened from below (through the post) to avoid a hole in the seat cover. Usually compatible with standard Pivotal seats (if the screw is long enough), but designed for Stealth seats.
Tripod
Has a triangular plate at the top. Provides the cleanest look and saves weight. The angle is determined by a wedge (only two positions possible).
Rail (Micro Adjust)
The classic with a clamp head for seats with two steel rails. Offers the largest adjustment range (forward/backward and angle). Often used for Oldschool or Trails builds.

Which materials are used for BMX Seat Posts?

Aluminium (6061-T6)
The standard. Light, stable, and affordable. Used for 95% of all freestyle posts.
Titanium
The absolute high-end material. As light as aluminium but often more durable and with a unique look. Perfect for riders who want to save weight without sacrificing stability.
Chromoly Steel
Very heavy, but indestructible. Rarely found today, mostly on older bikes or budget setups.

Which Seat Post is right for my needs?

Besides the system (which is dictated by your seat), the length is the decisive factor.

Riding Style Recommended Length Why?
Park & Trails (Slammed) Short (75mm - 135mm) You ride the seat completely down ("slammed") to avoid hitting it. A short post saves weight.
Allround & Street Medium (150mm - 200mm) Allows you to raise the seat slightly for barspins (clamping) or a classic look.
Flatland & Commuting Long (300mm+) If you actually want to sit while pedaling or need the seat height for specific Flatland tricks.

How do I install a BMX Seat Post?

  1. Preparation: Clean the inside of the frame's seat tube and the post.
  2. Greasing: Apply a thin layer of grease to the post. Important: This prevents the aluminium/titanium post from seizing (cold welding) to the steel frame over time!
  3. Insertion: Slide the post into the frame to the desired height.
  4. Clamping: Tighten the seat clamp. Do not use extreme force to avoid crushing the post.

How do I maintain and care for my Seat Post?

  • Regular movement: Loosen the clamp every few months and move the post slightly to prevent it from getting stuck.
  • Re-greasing: If the post creaks, clean it and apply fresh grease.

How do I identify and fix common problems?

  • Post slips down: The clamp is too loose or there is too much grease. Clean everything and apply less grease.
  • Post is stuck: If the post won't move, penetrating oil (WD40) and patience helps. In the future: Always use grease during installation!
