BMX Race Stems

Optimize your cockpit and handling with a stiff BMX Race Stem. The stem length (Reach) determines how your bike feels: Short for control, long for stability. We stock Top Load and Front Load stems for all fork sizes (1" and 1-1/8"). Critical: Check your fork steerer diameter before buying!

BMX Race Stems FAQ

What is a BMX Race Stem and why is the fit crucial?

The Stem connects the Fork to the Handlebar. In BMX Racing, it serves as a fine-tuning tool for your cockpit length. A stem that is too long makes the bike hard to manual; a stem that is too short makes it twitchy at high speeds.

How is a Race Stem constructed?

Body
CNC-machined aluminum to save weight. It clamps onto the fork steerer tube.
Faceplate
The front cap that clamps the handlebars, usually held by 4 bolts.
Clamping Area
Must match your bar diameter (Standard 22.2mm or Oversized 31.8mm).

Types: Front Load vs. Top Load

The choice affects your handlebar height:

  • Top Load: The bar sits on top of the stem body. Raises the cockpit. Popular for taller riders or to gain leverage.
  • Front Load: The bar sits in front of the stem body. Lowers the cockpit. Good for smaller riders or keeping the front end low for aerodynamics.

Which Stem fits my bike? (The 1 Inch Trap!)

You must match the stem to your fork steerer tube diameter. Check this carefully!

Bike Size Fork Steerer Ø Typical Reach
Micro / Mini / Junior 1 Inch (25.4mm) 30mm – 45mm
Expert 1 Inch OR 1-1/8 Inch (Check!) 45mm – 50mm
Pro / Pro XL / Cruiser 1-1/8 Inch (28.6mm) 50mm – 65mm

31.8mm Oversized – The New Standard?

Traditionally, BMX bars are 22.2mm thick. However, brands like Box and Promax have introduced the 31.8mm Standard (borrowed from MTB) to BMX Racing. These stems and bars are significantly stiffer, providing more direct steering response for powerful riders. Note: 31.8mm stems require 31.8mm bars!

How do I install a stem correctly?

  1. Slide the stem onto the fork steerer. Ensure there is a small gap (2-3mm) between the top of the stem and the top of the fork tube so the top cap can compress the headset.
  2. Install the handlebars. Tighten the 4 faceplate bolts in a cross pattern (X-pattern).
  3. Important: Ensure the gap between the faceplate and the stem body is even on the top and bottom ("Gap Management").
  4. Align the stem with the front wheel and tighten the side pinch bolts.
