BMX Race Tubeless Spare Parts FAQ
What is a Tubeless Setup and why ride it in BMX?
Tubeless means riding without an inner tube. Instead, the air is held directly by the tire and rim, sealed by a special liquid (sealant). This system offers three massive advantages for racers:
- Less Weight: You save the rotating mass of the tube (approx. 100-150g per wheel).
- No "Snakebites": Since there is no tube to get pinched between the rim and a rock/edge, pinch flats are impossible.
- Self-Sealing: Thorns or small cuts are instantly sealed by the milk while riding.
What do I need for the conversion? (The Checklist)
You cannot just remove the tube. You need specific components:
- 1. Tubeless Ready Rims & Tires
- Your Rims and Tires must be marked as "Tubeless Ready" (TR). They have tighter tolerances to hold air.
- 2. Tubeless Rim Tape
- Special adhesive tape that seals the spoke holes air-tight. Vinyl tape does not work here!
- 3. Tubeless Valves
- These have a rubber cone to seal the valve hole from the inside and a removable core to inject sealant.
- 4. Sealant (Milk)
- The liquid latex that seals micropores and punctures.
How do I install a Tubeless Setup?
- Clean the Rim: It must be 100% dry and free of glue/grease.
- Apply Tape: Stick the tubeless tape tightly into the rim bed. Overlap it by 10-15cm at the valve hole.
- Install Valve: Poke a small hole for the valve and tighten it with the nut.
- Mount Tire: Mount the tire (dry first). Inflate it rapidly (compressor or booster pump helps) until the beads "pop" into the rim flange.
- Add Sealant: Deflate, remove the valve core, and inject the recommended amount of sealant (approx. 60-80ml for 20").
- Inflate & Shake: Inflate to ride pressure and spin/shake the wheel to distribute the milk.
How do I maintain my Tubeless system?
- Refill Sealant: The liquid dries out over time (3-6 months depending on heat). Check regularly by shaking the wheel (you should hear it sloshing).
- Valve Care: Sealant can clog valves. Clean the valve core occasionally or replace it.
What do the specifications mean?
| Specification | Explanation | Examples/Available |
|---|---|---|
| Valve Length | Must be longer than your rim depth. | 44mm (Standard), 60mm |
| Tape Width | Must cover the entire rim bed (wall to wall). | 21mm, 25mm, 30mm |
| Valve Type | Almost always Presta (SV) for tubeless. | Presta (SV) |
