Ours are by Five Ten, whose Stealth rubber has been the benchmark for grip for years. Two systems to choose from: flat for platform pedals, clipless for SPD.

Flat or clipless – which suits me?
- Flat (platform pedal)
- The shoe simply rests on the pins.
Pros: You can put a foot down any time – ideal for learning, dirt and bike park.
Cons: On rough sections the foot can shift. - Clipless (two-bolt / SPD)
- A cleat connects the shoe to the pedal.
Pros: The foot always sits in the same place, smoother pedalling, nothing slips.
Cons: Clipping out takes practice.
Why Stealth rubber?
Five Ten came out of climbing and developed the compound in 1986 to hold on rock. It works the same way on pedal pins: the shoe stays put as if glued, yet still lets go when you deliberately reposition your foot.
Can I ride BMX in MTB shoes?
The flat models, yes – plenty of BMX riders use Freeriders. If you want a flatter sole with more pedal feel, look at the BMX shoes.
