Blackburn FAQ
Who or what is Blackburn?
Blackburn (Blackburn Design) is a Californian maker of bike accessories: floor pumps and mini pumps, saddle bags and bikepacking luggage, lights, racks and tools. These are the parts that rarely take centre stage and then decide how a ride ends.
Who founded Blackburn?
Jim Blackburn, in California, in 1975. It started with racks and bottle cages for touring, built from aircraft aluminium – lighter and stronger than anything else at the time. The EX-1 touring rack from those early years is still in production today.
What does Blackburn stand for?
One simple sentence: make it right and back it with a lifetime warranty. That attitude still shapes the range – Blackburn products lean towards robust rather than featherweight, and wear parts are built to be replaced individually.
What makes Blackburn products special?
Several industry firsts go back to Jim Blackburn: the first high-quality aircraft-aluminium rack, the first dual-stroke mini pump, the first large-volume mountain bike mini pump and the first dual-stage floor pump. If you buy a mini pump today that moves air on both strokes, you are buying an idea from here.
What does Blackburn mainly make?
- Floor pumps – up to models with a charge chamber for seating tubeless tyres.
- Mini pumps for the road, in several sizes.
- Saddle bags and frame bags, many of them with reflective details.
- Lights, racks and multi-tools.
Who are Blackburn products for?
For anyone who actually rides their bike: the floor pump for the workshop at home, the mini pump and the saddle bag with tube and tool for the ride. Comparable ranges come from Lezyne and – for the bags – Acepac.
How are Blackburn, Bell and Giro connected?
Blackburn belongs to the same group as Bell and Giro – all three run under Bell Sports LLC in Irvine, California. For workshop tools, Park Tool remains the classic alongside.
