Neck Braces

A neck brace limits how far head and neck can move in a crash. It rests on the shoulders and channels the force of an impact past the neck into chest and back. In BMX racing it is standard equipment for many riders, usually worn together with a full face helmet and a chest protector.

Neck Braces FAQ

Which size fits?

Neck braces are sized by chest circumference and body height, not by head size. Every manufacturer publishes a chart for each model, and the sizes are usually S/M, L/XL and XXL. Children get their own junior models, because an oversized brace shifts in a crash and then holds nothing.

Working with helmet and protector

The brace has to sit under the helmet rim without the helmet resting on it at the back. Full face helmets and neck braces from the same manufacturer are usually matched to each other. If you also wear a chest protector, check whether the brace goes over or under it.

What wears out

Padding and buckles are wear parts and can be replaced individually. After a hard crash, inspect the brace: visible cracks in the shell mean replacement, not another lap.
