Torque Wrenches

Tighten to spec, not by feel. Torque Wrenches tighten stem, bars, seat clamp and brake caliper to exactly the Newton metres the manufacturer specifies – mandatory on carbon and on every bolt that threads into aluminium. From compact, preset torque drivers for 4 to 6 Nm to adjustable torque wrenches with ratchet and scale up to 20 Nm.

Torque Wrenches FAQ

Preset or adjustable?

A preset torque wrench (torque driver) knows one value, usually 4, 5 or 6 Nm, clicks audibly when it is reached and fits in a jersey pocket – ideal for stem and bar clamps on the trail. An adjustable torque wrench covers a range, say 2 to 20 Nm, and belongs in the workshop: for brake calipers, crank bolts and everything the manufacturer specifies individually.

What to look for

The range has to match the bolt: small clamps sit at 4 to 8 Nm, a bottom bracket or a cassette at 35 to 50 Nm – that takes a second, larger tool. Bits and sockets fit a 1/4" or 3/8" drive, and after the job you wind the wrench back to its lowest setting so the spring does not fatigue.
