SISU

SISUSISU from Michigan makes mouth guards you barely notice wearing. Instead of a thick tray, the perforated material moulds around the teeth, so talking and breathing still work. For BMX race and anything where a crash can go face first.

SISU FAQ

Who or what is SISU?

SISU is the mouth guard brand of Akervall Technologies from Saline, Michigan. The company was founded by Sassa and Jan Akervall; he is a surgeon and came to the question of why a guard has to be so thick through his own dissatisfaction with conventional mouth guards. The name is Finnish and describes a kind of persistence that carries on when it really should not be possible any more.

What does SISU do differently?

Conventional mouth guards are made of soft material and are therefore thick. SISU uses a non-compressible polymer and perforates it across the whole surface, so an impact is spread instead of being passed on at one point. The result is a mouth guard of 1.6 to 2.4 millimetres that you can talk and drink with.

SISU in BMX

In BMX race the mouth guard sits alongside the full-face helmet and the pads. At the gate it matters that you can still understand instructions and shout, and that is exactly where a thin mouth guard weighs less than a classic tray.
