Who is a set for?
If you are starting out and do not yet know what you need, a set works well: everything matches and costs less than three separate purchases. If you already know you want more protection at the knees than at the elbows, you are better off combining your own.

A set comes in one size for all parts. If your knees and elbows need different sizes, separate guards are the better choice.
