Chest Protectors
A chest protector covers the sternum, the ribs and in most cases the back as well. In BMX racing and downhill it is standard equipment, usually worn with a full face helmet and a neck brace.

Chest Protectors FAQ
Working with a neck brace
Chest protector and neck brace have to match: the brace rests on the shoulders and the protector must not lift it. Models from the same manufacturer are usually matched, and many protectors have removable shoulder sections for exactly this.
Hard shell or soft material?
Hard shells spread a point impact better, for instance from a bar end. Soft hardening materials are more comfortable and barely show under a jersey. Both are certified; the choice follows the discipline.
