Pliers
Grip, hold, cut. Pliers for the bike workshop: water pump pliers and pliers wrenches for axle nuts, pegs and headsets, side cutters and wire rope cutters for brake and gear cables, outer casing and zip ties, circlip pliers for hubs, pedals and shocks, plus combination, flat nose and locking pliers for everything that is stuck.

Pliers FAQ
Which pliers for what?
A wire rope cutter cuts brake and gear cables without fraying and goes cleanly through outer casing, where an ordinary side cutter crushes the cable. Water pump pliers grip axle nuts, pegs and cones of any size, the pliers wrench does the same with smooth parallel jaws and leaves no marks on aluminium or chrome. Circlip pliers come for internal and external rings, straight or angled, and the tip size has to match the ring.
What to look for
Length sets leverage and capacity: 150 to 180 mm is enough for cables and small nuts, 250 mm for axle nuts and bottom brackets. Forged chrome vanadium steel and induction hardened cutting edges last for decades, and multi-component handles sit better in the hand than plain plastic dips.
