The
Sapim "CX-Ray Aero" Spoke (Without Nipple)
is one of the best known spokes in wheelbuilding and consistently ranks at the top in fatigue testing. Its bladed middle section combines high strength with elasticity. This version has the classic bent head (J-bend) and fits all hubs with a conventional spoke hole.
Sapim is a Belgian spoke manufacturer, and this spoke is made of stainless steel. Its middle section has a tensile strength of 1600 N/mm², and the manufacturer lists it in lengths from 141 - 310 mm.

1. The right length: spoke length follows from rim, hub and lacing pattern, so the figures below are guide values only.
- BMX 20 inch (406 mm), 3 cross: typically approx. 186 mm front and approx. 184 mm rear
- BMX Race 20 inch (451 mm): rather approx. 200 to 205 mm
- BMX 18 inch: typically approx. 156 to 164 mm
- BMX 16 inch: typically approx. 132 to 140 mm
- 12 and 14 inch: no manufacturer publishes reliable figures for these, please ask us
- 22, 24, 26 and 29 inch as well as MTB: this depends so much on rim and hub that we would rather work it out
Tell us the rim, the hub and the lacing pattern and we will work the length out for you. It is quick and far better than a wheel worth of the wrong length.
On the pattern: BMX rims from 18 inch up are almost always drilled for 3 cross. Smaller wheels are usually laced 2 cross or 1 cross, and at the front sometimes radially. Disc brake wheels should be laced at least 2 cross, and many manufacturers exclude radially laced hubs from their warranty.
2. The right quantity: this spoke is sold individually, so please adjust the quantity in your cart. A BMX wheel usually has 36 holes, an MTB wheel usually 32, and newer MTB wheels often 28 at the front and 32 at the rear. Small kids wheels often have only 16, 20 or 28 holes. 2 to 3 spare spokes are always a good idea.
3. Do not forget the nipples: this spoke ships without a nipple. Please order the matching nipples at the same time.
