Misc. Tools + Co. FAQ

Essential: Tire Levers

BMX tires have stiff wire beads. Trying to remove them with a screwdriver will scratch your rim and pop your tube. Plastic Tire Levers are cheap, effective, and safe for your rims.

When do I need a Crank Puller?

If you want to remove specific 3-piece cranks (especially race cranks or spindles with a tight fit), a Crank Puller is mandatory. Without it, the arms are often stuck so tight that hitting them with a hammer will only destroy the bearings or the spindle thread. The puller pushes the arm off the spindle safely and in a controlled way.

Installing Bearings: Hammer vs. Press Tool

Bottom brackets (Mid BB, Spanish BB) and headsets are pressed into the frame. While many people use a block of wood and a hammer, a proper Bearing Press Tool ensures that the bearings sit perfectly straight. Crooked bearings spin poorly, wear out faster, and can permanently ovalize the bearing seat of your frame.
